Located within Fort Lauderdale’s Financial District, Las Olas Square is a renovation of the historic SunTrust Bank Building and adjoining office tower courtyard. Ground floor levels of the existing bank will be redesigned to accommodate retail and restaurant spaces. Our design strategy extends the interior program into the landscape to provide dining and gathering spaces creating a new urban mixed-use plaza.
Character Green Buttonwood Trees and arching Sabal Palms form a shaded canopy connecting the 4-story SunTrust Bank and adjacent 25-story office tower. Throughout the plaza, monolithic oolite blocks provide seating opportunities while regulating a 2-foot topographic variation between the buildings. Our grading strategy channels stormwater runoff into a series of recessed planting areas to reduce environmental impacts and site engineering costs. A quilt of modular pavers encompasses the ground plane, thus unifying spatial elements of the square while establishing a distinct identity within the urban fabric.
